IKON radio Live bij OBA

Two weeks ago I was on Dutch radio IKON live at the library of Amsterdam. I was there earlier this year and was happy I was invited again to play in the live broadcast. We played twice, there was an interview with  Andrea Maier, an internist gerontologist, a specialist in old age. She says: "Aging is not inevitable." And: "We will develop a drug to slow or stop the mechanism of getting older. " So I chose two songs about saying goodbye, and later on she came to me and I know she really listened to the songs because she told me she thought the songs we played  were consistent with the interview :)

Busking in Amsterdam-Noord

As you can read in this blog I started my musical career by busking in the streets of Europe.
It's been a long time I played in the street and lately I decided to play in the street again. I need to buy some good stuff for this, because playing acoustic is too hard for me, I don't have a strong voice. I used to play in tunnels or really small streets with a good acoustic sound. Soon I will try Utrecht again, but I need to get a license first. In Utrecht this license is for free, they told me. I am not sure about Amsterdam, have to figure out this.
But today I  fortunately played on a market!
At a market in Amsterdam-Noord(Pekmarkt)  there is a free spot for musicians to play,it is not very well known yet. The atmosphere is really great up there. Mario, a very nice bassplayer, played with me this time. I felt very comfortable, it's a way of living and somehow a good way to be among the people. The contrasts are large, so many different people and so many different comments ...
 I really need to go busking again, I love the people in the street, I feel at home.
I think that I feel comfortable  because I started my musical life in the streets, so actually here are my roots. It's where I started and it is where I will problably end ...

Art Rocks

Today I send a vid to Art Rocks, I did this because I got inspired by a painting and  I really would like to play in the museum of Groningen (Groninger Museum) next to this painting of Wobbe Alkema (1924) with my friends Eric, Manuel, Jannet and Auke. It's a competiton though, so people have to vote on me, I guess ... anyway, you don't need to do that, I just like to share the vid, I made it myself, I just discovered I like to make films with my little camera in moviemaker, in a very simple way. So this one you can watch, the camerawork is from Jan Muggen, a friend of mine and I edited it. In a week or so I will edit a "making of " because I have made some nice shots of the recording of the song. Hope you like the song, the break just before the refrains are on purpose, it's a little silence and you can see the painting in that silence .

Proef de Wadden op Schiermonnikoog

Afgelopen weekend was ik samen met Jannet Fink te gast bij het 25 jarig jubileum van AtelierSchier op Schiermonnikoog.
De initiatiefneemster, Garda Meerdink, had het ludieke plan opgevat om ons te programmeren voorafgaand aan de opening van het feest, waarbij wij in een bootje op de Berkenplas zouden varen en musiceren.
Leuk plan, maar ehh.... hoe..?.. wat...? Dat werd erg spannend!
Er lag water in de kano en hij was wel erg wiebelerig.... durfden wij dat wel? Gelukkig kwam er een stoere man met een roeispaan en die zei dat hij wel even ons het water op zou roeien. Als we maar heel erg stil zouden zitten..... welnu, dat was inderdaad het allerbelangrijkste! Stilzitten, onbeweeglijk gitaar spelen en zingen... dat was zo eng dat ik compleet alle teksten door elkaar haalde. Gelukkig kunnen Jannet en ik goed improviseren en wisten we er nog wat van te maken. Hoe bijzonder is dat! Varen in een kano en dan liedjes zingen van Sandy Denny ! .... en dan begint het nog te stortregenen ook! De koene roeier - hij heette Mark - roeide ons rustig weer terug naar de kant, waarop wij net als de andere gasten snel schuilden in een tent.
Daar hebben wij nog wat liedjes gespeeld.
Daarna werden wij gedirigeerd naar De Bunker. De Wasserman, de grootste bunker van het eiland, daar zou een groepje fietsers langskomen en die zouden wij als verrassingsact uitzwaaien met een lied.
Het was prachtig weer en terwijl wij wachtten op de fietsers namen wij plaats op de picknicktafel onderaan het duin en speelden wij onze muziek. We hebben heerlijk gespeeld en genoten van de enthousiaste reacties.
Later op de dag hebben we bij de watertoren nog een filmpje gemaakt van een paar liedjes.
Op de dag zelf waren er onder de naam 'Proef de Wadden' tal van andere activiteiten.

Landjuweel @Ruigoord

Gisteren bracht ik de dag door in Ruigoord, festival Landjuweel 2014. Samen met Jannet Fink speelde ik een set in Teejoos Theetuin, een prachtige tuin met een leuk podium! 

Voor deze gelegenheid had Jannet haar viool meegebracht waar zij een element in kon plaatsen, en laat dit nu net de viool zijn die zij overgenomen heeft van Dave Swarbrick, de violist van Fairport Convention! 

Wij hebben een aantal liedjes gespeeld van Sandy Denny en wat eigen songs. 

Het was een ontzettende leuke dag, Landjuweel 2014 is een bijzonder leuk festival dat vier dagen lang feestviert. We hebben er van genoten! Zie: /Landjuweel 2014

SchierSong Festival

Last weekend I organized SchierSong Festival on the beautiful Dutch island Schiermonnikoog.
We were with 5 songwriters and we had a performance in this bus on the beach. The first night the bus was full of people and we had a good time. The sky was beautiful around us!

The second night was also nice, but it rained a lot. But still some people came to listen to us and we did some good performances. The audience was enthousiastic so we will come back next year. I spoke to some people of the island and the people are very helpfull.

The other songwriters were Kerwin Pauptit, Armand Wijskamp from Groningen and Barbara Breedijk and Joep van Leeuwen from Amsterdam

 

Festivals

I like festivals and I will play on several.
Last week I played at a secret festival, it's called Schellingwoude FEstival and you will find no information about it on the internet.

In Schellingwoude

It is a beautiful festival on the banks of the IJ in Amsterdam North. The weather was beautiful on this Midsummer. I had the honor  to open the festival. I played some old songs there together with Frankie on bass.
Tonight I played at  another festival; ThissFest. This is a festival that takes place in different cities in Holland and is organized by the Dutch Nonprofit Foundation whose mssion is to promote the work of independent singersongwriters. The second edition of ThissFst will be held from the 23rd to the 29th of June 2014 in Amsterdam, The Haque, Leiden, Roterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem.

Tonight I played in Utrecht  with Daniel Tempelman. I met Daniel on a SWAN evening in Amsterdam and he has a strong Leonard Cohen sound. I really like Leonard Cohen and tonight we have put together three of his songs played. First I opened with two original songs.

Het SchierSong Festival - Part I

Ik hou erg veel van het eiland Schiermonnikoog; die liefde zat er al vroeg bij mij in.
Mijn moeder liet mij kennismaken met het eiland vanaf mijn geboorte; ik heb er nog hele vroege herinneringen aan. Mijn grootouders hebben er gewoond, mijn opa was er huisarts. Mijn moeder is er geboren en opgegroeid. Later verhuisde dat gezin naar Rotterdam.
Mijn eigen dochters wilde ik graag het gevoel voor het eiland meegeven, dus ook ik nam ze vanaf hun geboorte mee naar Schiermonnikoog. We hebben er ooit een website van gemaakt, daar zijn we nu niet meer actief op omdat de meiden ondertussen groot geworden zijn.

In mijn jonge jaren speelde ik op het eiland gitaar en schreef ik Nederlands talige liedjes. Ik vond laatst zo'n liedje terug, de tekst ging over de pizzeria (vroeger pizzeria Maria) waar ik werkte.

Ik hoop dat het gaat lukken om deze zomer met een aantal songwriters uit Amsterdam en Groningen een leuk klein en intiem festivalletje op te zetten. Deze songwriters hadden na een oproep in de SWANgroup en het Groninger Songwriter Circle zelf aangegeven dat ze zin hadden om mee te doen. Het zijn Barbara Breedijk, Joep van Leeuwen, Armand Wijskamp en Kerwin Pauptit. Daarnaast heb ik een oproep gedaan naar eilanders om zich op te geven voor een open podium. Ik hoop dat er een paar zijn die tussen de acts door iets willen laten zien.

Afgelopen weekend heb ik flyers rondgebracht op het eiland en persoonlijk de akoestiek op het strand uitgeprobeerd. Terwijl ik zong was ik getuige van een prachtige zonsondergang!
Ook ontmoette ik Monique, die via haar site tickets aanbiedt.( zie: tickets SchierSong ) Ook kun je kaartjes kopen bij Garda in de bus zelf.
Afgezien van het feit dat ik zeer open ontvangen ben door een aantal eilanders ( Jeroen, Yneke, Garda, Monique, Ronald, Jan H.) en iedereen onmiddellijk bereid was posters voor me op te hangen,  heb ik ook mogen genieten van de prachtige natuur en het zomerse weer. Wat een heerlijk weekend heb ik achter de rug!

I am in love with the island Schiermonnikoog.
My mother introduced me to the island from my birth; I have very early memories here . My grandparents lived there, my grandfather there was a doctor. My mother was born there. When she was 12 years old  the family moved to Rotterdam.
 I wanted to give the sense of the island to my daughters, so I took them  along to Schiermonnikoog their whole life. We have ever created a web site,(we are no longer active because the girls are now grown. )

In my younger years I played guitar on the island and I wrote Dutch songs. I recently found back such a song , the text was about the pizzeria (formerly Pizzeria Maria) where I worked.
I hope I will succeed to play with some songwriters from Amsterdam and Groningen  this summer. I try to organize a nice small and intimate little festival These songwriters joined the festival after a call in the SWANgroup and the Groninger Songwriter Circle. Their names are: Barbara Breedijk , Joep van Leeuwen , Armand Wijskamp and Kerwin Pauptit . I also appealed to islanders in order to provide for an open stage . I hope there are a few who want to show their talents .
The bus of Garda Meerdink is a prime location ! Last weekend I put flyers around the island and tried out  the acoustics at the beach . As I sang , I witnessed a beautiful sunset !
I also met Monique , she is offering tickets by website .
Aside from the fact that I was  warmly received  by a number of islanders ( Jeroen Yneke , Garda , Monique , Ronald , John H. ) and everyone was immediately prepared to hang up posters,  I may also enjoy the beautiful nature and the summer weather . What a wonderful weekend I had!

Dodenherdenking Mosveld Amsterdam-Noord

 Enige tijd geleden werd ik gevraagd om te zingen op 4 mei bij de kranslegging op het Mosveld in Amsterdam-Noord. Daar moest ik toch wel even over nadenken voordat ik daar ja op zei... uiteindelijk besloot ik het te doen. Ooit had ik het lied Donna Donna naar het Nederlands vertaald en voor deze herdenking  heb ik mijn Nederlandse vertaling aangepast. Het lied Donna Donna is in Nederland vooral bekend in de uitvoering van Donovan, maar het heet oorspronkelijk "Dos Kelbl". In 1941 geschreven door Aaron Zeitlin in het Joodse ghetto van Warschau.

Samen met Eline Schrama, een meisje hier uit de buurt dat fantastisch viool speelt, heb ik vanavond dit lied gezongen.. Van te voren was ik  best zenuwachtig, het is toch wel een heel groot en belangrijk onderwerp. Gelukkig ging het goed.
Jos de Rooij, een muzikant uit Amsterdam-Noord had de herdenking georganiseerd en er een boekje bij gemaakt. Van te voren hadden we een doorloop en daarna mochten alle mensen gratis iets drinken bij café De Bult. Al met al een erg bijzondere ervaring, deze 4 mei.

English translation
Some time ago I was asked to sing on May 4 at the wreath laying at the Mosveld in Amsterdam - Noord . I had to think about it before I said yes to it ... eventually I decided to do it. Once I had translated the song Donna Donna  into Dutch and for this commemoration , I have adjusted my Dutch translation. The song Donna Donna is in the Netherlands  well known in the performance of Donovan , but it was originally called " Dos Kelbl " . In 1941 written by Aaron Zeitlin in the Jewish ghetto of Warschau.
I played the song together with Eline Schrama,  a girl from around here that's a fantastic violin player. Beforehand I was quite nervous , because it is a very important subject . But everything went well .
Jos de Rooij , a musician from Amsterdam North had organized the commemoration and made a flyer​​. In advance we had a walk-through and then allowed everyone a free drink at Café De Bult . This night was a very special experience.

En jawel, aan de vooravond van mn verjaardag gingen we weer los ! Veel muziek en onverwachte gasten !
En Francesco, Harry, Henk, Frankie gaven me toch een concert ! En natuurlijk Eric, Auke en Manuel, mijn fantastische begeleiders, waren ook zoals gewoonlijk zeer goed  in vorm.
Ik weet wel wie ik moet uitnodigen voor feestjes: de hele buurt. Dank jullie allemaal voor het leuke feestje. Vandaag ging ik gewoon door met feesten. Om 11 uur een optreden op het Noord Podium op de NDSM-werf in Noord. En de rest van de dag mooie acts van jazzmusici en songwriters. Ook een fijne samenwerking met de geluidsman Bert. Hartelijk dank voor jullie bijdrage deze dagen !

And yes, on the eve of my birthday there was a big party! At 8 pm , I got a  little worried, I didn't know how many people would show up, but half an hour later the house was full of people .
And there was a great jamsession with Francesco, Harry, Hank, Frankie ! And of course Eric, Auke and Manuel did a great job when they played with me my songs.
I know who to invite for parties: the whole neighborhood. Thank you all for the nice party last night. Today the party was going on at  the NDSM. At 11 o'clock I played my music at the North Stage with Manuel, Eric and Auke again. . And the rest of the day,I listened to the  beautiful acts of jazz musicians and songwriters. I also had a fine collaboration with the sound engineer Bert. Thank you for your contribution these days!
