Israël and the Palestinians

DUTCH TRANSLATION BELOW
How I discovered the Westbank

The husband of a good friend of mine died suddenly from a cardiac arrest last year. My friend lives with her family in Jerusalem and I decided to visit her as soon as I could. I booked a plane and so I flew totally unprepared to Israel.
As a young girl, I deliberately chose not to deepen myself into politics. I have not watched the news for years and I read newspapers every now and then superficially. You may find that strange, but I have enough trouble with myself. I think it is better for my personality to focus on my immediate environment.  I am a teacher at a primary school. There I deal with 25 children and their parents every day. I want to take good care of that.  For my own sake is that enough work.
In addition, I am a musician and I write songs.
That's why I planned to sing in the streets of Jerusalem, my friend had told me that it’s not unusual there. And the only thing I  was worried about was:” oh, I hope there will be  no attack committed by a Palestinian or something like that...”. The combination Palestinian / terrorist / attack I had caught from the media ... However, I got a laryngitis. So making music was not possible. And so my friend invited me to come with her and  see and understand more of the country.
So she took me to the beach in Tel Aviv and she took me to the West Bank. At first I thought I saw sound barriers around me, I know, very naive, even though I had heard something about checkpoints. I did not know what that was, checkpoints. I had seen strange movies on youtube. About soldiers who intimidate children.  They stopped children who wanted to go to school  Very strange vids, why do ten big soldiers surround a single child of barely 10 years?
Very slowly I started to see what I just did not see at first. It is fun in Jerusalem, it feels safe. Yes, there are many soldiers, young people, women, men. Sometimes still  almost children. As a woman I dare to walk alone on the street late at night. What a wonderful city.
But then I went through a checkpoint towards Bethlehem. And I saw more and more fences, barbed wire, people who were stopped. Soldiers laughing, playing with people. And I heard stories.
Suddenly saw two types of buses. The Jewish and Arab. I drove over roads that are not indicated in Google maps ...
If you do not know  you do not see it. If you see something happening , you do not really see it because you can not believe it, you cannot hande it yet.  But if you are always pointed out and you feel that something strange is going on, you are gradually seeing more. Piece by piece. And that is a very weird inner experience.
I do not want to take a position. I am not against or for Palestinians or Jews. The story is nuanced. It has to do with identity. But I always take it for the oppressed. The unjust. And that's what I've seen there. There is something very serious going on there and in a very strange way and  the whole world knows. I do not want to watch a journal, I do not want to read newspapers. Since I have been home from Israel  I have read a lot about the situation, I talked to people with differents point of views.
checkpoint
I get a headache. The bickering, the opinions,  choosing for one or another. I can no longer be a spectator if I have experienced injustice. In person. I have enormous respect for my friend who, in her own personal way, makes connections between Jewish people and Palestinians. She makes that they get to know each other as human beings. She shows that they do not have to be afraid of each other. That there is a possibility to live together. There IS a possibility!
How special and wonderfull Jerusalem would be if human beings could  live and celebrate their lifes  together !? What a great example for the world that would be!
I also have a lot of respect for the way my friend processes her own personal loss. She lost her husband. She has two growing children.
I need time to process what I have seen and experienced in Israel in a short time. I want to thank my friend for what she has given me.
And I want  people to grow up and understand.
I wrote a song. It is called: Stones in the desert.

Zag ineens twee soorten bussen.
Zij is haar geliefde verloren.

Last year I taught a series of lessons on the blues

🎶🎵.
When I showed the class a recording of Robert Johnson, a student exclaimed that he was going to put his hands over his ears because he couldn't stand this kind of music.😎
"I don't know why," he said, "But this kind of music makes me feel really miserable..."😥
But he had to participate in the lesson. The kids had to write (and perform) a blues, he did a good job, though👍 and I wrote a song about this student's reaction; a reaction that I found very pure.
Mario and I played that song at the shopping centre in Amsterdam.

New permit to play with an amplifier in Amsterdam

 I have good news!

😄 The municipality of Amsterdam has extended my permit! With special thanks to Mr. A. of the Noord district; after a short chat it took him only a day to honor my request 👍😘which is pretty fast for this kind of requests.
Applying for a license for amplified music is apparently very unusual by Amsterdam standards. It is forbidden to play amplified in Amsterdam, but I have the idea that recently musicians are no longer sent away by the police as quickly as before the lockdown. That’s great, let's keep the streets alive!🎸🎼🎷

Short busking trip to France

Hi folks!

I got this license to play in the metro of Paris and that is why I go now and than to that city. I bought a train ticket for only 35 euros and i wanted to go there in Januari. But than i got Corona so i changed tickets. Actually i did not feel like I would spend a lot of time in the metro so i decided to travel a little further: I took a TER train to Tours.
It was quite hard to find a good spot, the old city has restaurants and lots of poor begging people, did not feel right to play there. I walked around when i arrived late at night and decided to play next day in front of the Monoprix in a large street with trams. that night I bought some wine and cheese and spent the night in this two stars hotel which was fine.
My first night in Tours
Next day i had some coffee ( 4 euro) and then I went to the Monoprix.  Iwas almost ready to perform when this security guy sent me away. I felt like a beggar from my song Beggars.
I looked for another spot which was difficult because of pretty much people with this little cup, asking for money. Finally I played at the end of the street, it was pretty quite but i did a good set and the preople reacted friendly.
I took a break and at the end of the afternoon i did another set at a more crowded place, in front of a banque. I went allright, but this Bulgaria guy chased me, actually i heard him playing and so i moved to another spot. But then after a while he came to me and d as is that he wanted to play. I tried to explain that i just moved because of him but he did not speak French or english. Hè became angry but left. After 29 minutes he came back and started to play a scale, just on the side of the street. I felt very uncomfortable but again he left. I was done and wanted to look for another spot. I saw him playing and i thought: lets give him a big smile and tell him he can play anywhere hè wants. Hè asked me if i was married, if i got kids and then he wanted to kiss me on the cheek, i shook hands.
I looked for another spot but there was this begging lady who shouted at me that i could not use that spot. It was sort of sleeping spot, i did not understand but it was clear she was defending that spot  it was in front of a closed magasin, i think it was the home of a homeless person.

I left that space but then I returned to the woman who was smoking on her fishing chair with her money cup in front of her. Actually she looked like a nice lady. Suddenly I felt really tired and spoke that up out loud. She said ' we all are'. Yeah sure, who am I to complain, i am not a beggar, i am a songwriter who is travelling and busking.
my view from my hotel in tours: sunset

Later at night I met her again in the old centre where she was begging, and i spoke to her again. She has a tough life but does not complain and brothers nobody. Just sitting there patiently with some charisma around her. A strong woman.
I did not sing anymore, i went to a bar with really good music, some French guys were jamming and i really liked their music.
I drank some wine and went to the hotel.
Next day i took a TGV to Paris. I wanted to play at metrostation République but there was this woman singing some soul. Good voice, so i did not mind waiting for her to finish.
But after one hour I asked her when she would leave and she told me she would stay another two hours! My god, so i left the station and looked for the hotel I booked.
That was near Place de la République so i could return easily to the metro. I did some shopping, had my dinner in the hotel ( just a piece of bread and some wine) and went back to the station praying no musicians on my favorite spot. And yes, i could play. I played untill 9.30 om untill a guy stole some money from my hat.
That's never happened before, i felt not so safe anymore.
So i went back to the hotel. Then i decided to go to an open mic for singers. It was a 20 minute walk from my hotel and i am very glad i did go because i had a great night! This was not an open mic, but a singing jamsessions. There are books with french lyrics and english lyrics and everybody can sing along with an acoustic band. I thought what the heck, i just go for it so i sang from the top of my longues :)
It was really late as i finally fell asleep in my nasty room in the hotel :)
When I woke up my first thought was: yes! Today I am going Home! :))
Now it maybe seems like I did not like this trip at all, but you know, I díd like it. I mean, to travel all by yourself you get to know yourself really good and sometimes it feels real bad, but I got my iphone and internet so I can always call my best friends anywhere.
And when I came home I felt so damn rich, I mean, I got a house, I got food , I got work, I got everything I need. And my love Mario was waiting for me. Actually that's the best of all.

The Corona virus at school

The Corona virus at school

I am a musician but  I also work as a teacher at a primary school; my pupils are 11-13 years old. By combating the coronavirus, a lot of people work at home and the schools are closed from Monday.  Monday we had a meeting at school to talk about how we could still provide education. Then we started preparing our lessons. On Tuesday morning, all children were able to collect their books and notebooks between 9 and 12 am and they started working on their homework this morning (Wednesday). We worked hard! I collected all the phone numbers of the children of my class (group 8) and created a group chat. The apps with a ‘goodmorning’ arrived early this morning. At 9 pm the work schedule was sent by the Parro app, a mail to all parents and I also sent the files as images to all kids in the whatsapp group. Some children had some questions, but soon everyone started doing their homework. At the end of the afternoon I received daily reports by email. It is all quite drastic. The whole society upside down. This afternoon I got the message that the  final(cito) test for group 8 is canceled this year. Not everyone is happy with that. Tomorrow morning I will send documents with answers  so that the kids can check their homework. And then they got new homework.I would like to give a lesson online but I did not figure out yet what’s the best way to do this. When I got back home, my daughter, who is in high school, took online lessons by Google Meet.Sounds good. I think that this whole event can lead to a completely different direction in education. I am curious what will happen.  I try to get the most out of it as much as possible.Musically, all performances up to and including April have been canceled. Playing on the street is currently also not done. As a metro musician, I was told by the RAT Paris not to play in the metro.I would go back to Paris in early April to renew my permit, but of course I also had to cancel this trip. Fortunately, the NS reimbursed all costs. So much for the update.

Niet naar Parijs...

(English below)
26 februari
Mijn been werkte niet echt mee. Dus.
Even proberen of dat allemaal ging lukken.
Doet me denken aan vorig jaar in Avignon.
Want wat the heck.
Haar bekertje stond naast mijn hoed.

ENGLISH
After six weeks of plaster, I was happy to get rid of it. I was planning to leave the hospital cheerfully, but that was a bit disappointing. In fact: I barely couldn't move. My leg didn't really cooperate. So. I wore my high boots for a few days until my foot squeezed and felt so painful that I started to worry. Back to the hospital. Fortunately no thrombosis, I was a little afraid of that; my foot was set up that way, it seemed like the veins were about to explode.
Anyway. Made an appointment with physiotherapy and when I got home I packed my little travel guitar. Small backpack with toiletry bag, stool and music stand and a walk with this little luggage in my living room. Why? Because I had booked a trip to Paris this weekend.
Let's try if it all worked out. Well, it was just possible. It could even be better: if I also leave the fishing stool and the music stand at home and only bring a pillow? Then I really have nothing to lug around, but then I have to sit on the ground .... Just like before. Singing on the ground .... that's how I started. Just like the beggars do, don't they. Now I need just an unused paper cup ...

Reminds me of last year in Avignon. I know the unwritten laws of the homeless people well. When  I was 18 I spent a day  walking along with the most experienced beggars in Bordeaux, now I know exactly what is allowed and what isn't.

So I knew very well that it was not done to sit in the same street as the woman who forced people to give her something in her cup. You have beggars and beggars.
This woman was not shy.  And yes, I actually thought it was a little MY street, too.  I also sang there last year and it was just the best place for a street musician like me: a narrow street, not too many people shopping. Moreover: she wasn't there that day I came along....! Hooray, so I started to sing.
But unfortunately .. who arrived? SHE.

And yes.
“Go away, this is my street, go sing somewhere else! ”, She shouted at me (in French)  after I had sung two English folk songs. I sang stiffly through, I was first. And she shouted through my singing to the passers-by: “Allo allo !! Here I am, give me some change (.. or I will HIT you)! "
I felt very uncomfortable, of course, but did not like to walk around for another hour in the heat to find a good spot. I really just wanted to sing and even share my money with her.
So I beckoned her. I asked her if she might want to sit next to me. She reacted somewhat reluctantly, then thought for a moment, and damned, she sat down next to me. I sang a song but earned nothing. Then she made a decision: "Look," she said strictly, "Here is my cup. You can put the money in here. We divide it. I'm leaving now and coming back soon. "
"Okay," I agreed. Because what the heck.

Her cup was next to my hat. I really hoped that I would earn something. I felt like giving her money. Not for the money, but to stimulate the cautious development of a positive relationship. Somehow I liked her. She commanded respect.
And yes, some euros came in. After an hour she came to collect the loot. With a satisfied look she said: "Tomorrow again?"
"Yes," I said. I was also satisfied. I had sung nicely in a nice place, so it was fine to me. So this is what happened the next days in Avignon. Singing with a cup in front of me, in which I distributed the income. And look, the woman who begged could now chill out with her sister, niece or the entire gitanes family hanging out in the center of Avignon. I met her every day, shopping or not, in the city where we greeted each other cheerfully. I think I grew up as a gypsy in a previous life.

Return to Paris. I have to decide NOW. I go sitting and singing on the ground in the subway with my old repetoire ... unencumbered .. loud, high singing ... difficult walking on crutches ... in the rain .... lonesome s in a hotel ... (I am having fun in itself)) OR stay home and  enjoy watching the final of the Voice at home, rehearsing in the morning in café Zamen and enjoying a friend's performance in the evening?
Why do I doubt? What the hell attracts me, that vulnerable, poor back to basics exist? All I need is a guitar. And a toothbrush, and clean underpants. And shelter of course.

But no, I now decide that I am not going. It's too complicated with those crutches and my foot. With pain in my heart I cancel the hotel and my printed train tickets remain unused in the cupboard.

Sandy Denny, best singer of the world

Yesterday I decided to record some songs of Sandy Denny. So I need to rehearse the songs.
When I was singing Who Knows I was thinking about this singer called Sandy Denny, she sang with Fariport Convention and died young. I always thought she fell downstairs. I am a member of the Sandy Denny fan club on Facebook and someone suggested me reading "I've Always Kept A Unicorn "by Mick Houghton. Some other people send me some interesting links which I already read, but I will give them to you (scroll down). This is the message I wrote on Facebook, and I put the video with it, me singing Who Knows at the attic.

This might be a little weird story, when i was 20 i listened for the first time to Sandy Denny and I fell in love with her voice and when i discovered she already died many years ago, (she felt down the stairs and did not survive) i felt sad for her and always kept wondering how this could happen. And this is really true, many times when i descended the attic i thought about her. Now i fell downstairs myself and only broke my foot, so i have to work partime these days, i have more time to spend some time to myself, listening to her music again, and surfing on the internet to get more information about her life. I cover some songs of her when i busk in France, and my favorite song is Who Knows. I just made this vid to share, and hope you google on Sandy Denny to find out yourself

Ik zei:" Je hebt me gebeld."
Kunt u even terugkomen?”
Mijn hiel??

Playing in the metro of Paris despite the strike

Hi guys, I was quite worried about playing in the metro of Paris, because I had received an email about something going on but did not really understand what was going on. I had already booked my train ticket, so I travelled to Paris anyway.
As I arrived at Gare du Nord, all metro stations were closed! I went by bus to the hotel, and they told me that some stations are open at certain times. On the site of the ratp you can read daily what is still possible. It's hard to travel because of a big strike in France.
Why do the French strike? It's because the retirement age will be raised from 62 to 64 and there will be a universal retire system. The goverment is convinced of the new plan, but the French don't like it. The strike is going on since December 2019 and it's a mess in Paris. The busses are overcrowded and I could not get from my hotel to Mont Martre because of this strike.

I wasn't sure if I could play in the metro anyway, but the staff of the RATP told me it shouldn't be a problem. I just wanted to play the first chord and then there were already 5 policemen around me! ... but they just wanted to know what kind of songs I was going to play.
You can listen to the songs I play in the video. Mario joined me with his bass and I tried out my new vocal performer.

I hope to be back in Paris next month. First I have to recover from my broken foot (I fell down the stairs).
The show must go on!
Our next performance is Saturday Jan. 18 in Amsterdam, Maloe Melo. Hope to meet you there again

Love,
Annette

Best open mics in Paris

I went to Paris with Annika (16) and Annegien (17).  I played in the metro but we also did an open mic tour in Paris.
You can visit some open mics on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
There are  other open mics are from Saturday to Tuesday but we could't make that. I once went at Galways (Irish Pub in Paris) and that's a good one, too.

But for now I'm talking about The Scottish Highlander, Café Jean and L'Oasis 244.

The subway in Paris - music in the metro

FOR FRENCH  (google) TRANSLATION . scroll below!
Hello everyone!
Last Sunday I went to my school. As you know, I am a teacher and I wanted to organize the classroom a bit. That is what I did. I was just a week back from France, where the weather was nice and where I played a lot on the street with Mario.
When I cycled back home I became very depressed. I was not charged enough to properly guide a group of children next week, I felt that clearly. The weather in the Netherlands was bad and I was tired. I decided to book a ticket to Paris. Because the weather was better there and I can perform in the metro there. In the Paris metro I sing who I am. It is better to sing on the street because there is more contact with the public. But the catacombs of Paris have something special. People are in a hurry and worried. And tired. And regularly lost. Even the children who are carried away by their parents do not look happy.
That is a state of mind in which I sometimes recognize myself. I needed to find myself in all my loneliness. So I run away, like I did when I was 18.
I was very stressed and confused.
I decided to take the first train to Paris and that was 7 o'clock on Monday morning.

When I arrived I immediately started singing at the République station. Nobody took notice of me. I only received four euros. Jesus, I've never gotten so little in my hat. But I thought so be it. I'm not concerned about the money. What is it all about? I don't know exactly yet.

I went to my hotel, then I first went to get some food. That evening I went back into the metro and I sang for an hour or two. For myself and for the people who might be affected. Because they recognize something, or because they get a special memory with a song. I see a lot in the metro. Fortunately there are also people who are a bit more relaxed and smile or raise their thumbs when I perform there.
In addition, there live alcoholics, addicted people and vagrants. People with little money begging. People who bring their children to ask the travelers money.
I did an audition this spring to play in the Paris metro. That is why I am protected. If something is wrong then the police are there.
But I love to sing for the passing crowd. For myself. It is almost a meditation. I think it's the best thing to do for me:  sing for the lost and lonely people. That is how I have known myself from my earliest childhood. A longing for nature and the essence of myself. And that's why I sing. And you know, the weird thing is that the most poor people give me money. This is almost embarrasing but I know there is a true honesty here.
This is what I posted on Facebook.
August 20

What I am doing ... I do not know ... Suddenly in Paris ... yesterday at this time I did not even know that I would be sitting here tonight ... It is late in the metro .. At a time when no metro is passing by - and therefore no one is around - I see a man being caught by the police (apparently he was there illegally selling things). I always get nervous from the police, I have experienced some incidents in the past, hence ... So my musical concentration is gone for a moment ... but ..for God sake ... while they drain that man ..: they just wave nice to me ...! They just know me from last time haha

Hallo iedereen!
21 August
Dear people, thank you for your messages, I panicked and left for Paris in all my loneliness. But it's okay. I have seen a lot in the metro, I know that with my hallelujah singing I can touch passers-by, but this is mutual. I see myself in the mirror, the fringes of society have been attracting me since my very early childhood. Last night there was a young girl, addicted and very sad. She danced to my songs and then she sat in a corner with an old stuffed animal pressed against her. An old alcoholic sat down with me and fell asleep. Two Parisians stood in front of me for at least half an hour, I wanted to give a CD but unfortunately I had forgotten to take it with me, as usual. They thanked me while I am actually grateful that I hear myself and them. I needed this.
I was away for a moment without knowing whether I would return. But everything is allright. . Like my whole life. I'm almost HOME XXX

Niemand nam notitie van me.

21 augustus:

Donc, ma concentration musicale a disparu un instant ... ils me saluent gentiment ...! Ils me connaissent depuis la dernière fois, haha
